Methodology

For over 200 years, we have known that phonemic awareness and phonics are essential foundational skills for learning how to read. Once mastered, students can become fluent readers, freeing their cognitive resources to focus on the meaning of text. This allows students to get more out of reading – from personal enjoyment, knowledge acquisition, to the ability to navigate our world.

How does it work?

Teaching children to read is a continuous process that spans from early childhood to early adulthood. With so much to learn over such an extended period of time, it is important to have frequent milestones and well defined, achievable targets. It is therefore imperative to include regular, reliable assessments in the process of reading instruction – we must know where the child stands in order to help them get where they are going. A LiTerrific assessment will serve as a signpost on the long journey toward mastering the important and enjoyable skill of reading.

Listen

Students are presented with a short, grade level appropriate passage, which they read into a microphone. They then retell the story in their own words.

Assess

LiTerrific’s phoneme detection technology categorizes errors to assess reading fluency and comprehension.

Report

Teachers are presented with a dashboard of the student’s performance, complete with summaries and phoneme level reports.

Literacy Instruction Methodology Advisors

Allison Ward Parsons

Allison Ward Parsons is an Associate Professor and Director of the Elizabeth G. Sturtevant Center for Literacy at George Mason University. She is a former Title I kindergarten teacher who strives to support teachers’ literacy instruction to optimize student literacy outcomes. She teaches undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral courses in literacy methods, research, and coaching for the Literacy and Elementary Education programs.

Her research examines (a) the development of effective literacy teachers and coaches, (b) teachers’ instructional adaptations, (c) students’ motivation to read, and (d) vocabulary development. Her research has been published in numerous outlets, including Literacy Research and Instruction, The Elementary School Journal, The Reading Teacher, Journal of Educational Research, and Review of Educational Research. She is the Vice-President-Elect for the Association of Literacy Educators and Researchers.

Patricia Durham, PhD.

Patricia Durham, PhD, is a professor in the School of Teaching and Learning in the College of Education at Sam Houston State University. She teaches in the elementary literacy methods, advanced literacy specialist certification, and literacy leadership programs.

Her research focuses on specialized literacy professional’s advance training, novice literacy teacher development, and elementary level reading metacognition skills. Dr. Durham is currently the co-editor for the Literacy Research and Instruction journal. She is a certified reading specialist and taught at the elementary level (1-5) for fifteen years.

Seth A. Parsons, PhD.

Seth A. Parsons, PhD, is a professor in the Sturtevant Center for Literacy in the School of Education at George Mason University. He teaches in the Elementary Education, Literacy, and Research Methods program areas. His award-winning research focuses on student motivation and engagement, teacher instructional adaptations, and teacher education and development.

A past president of the Association of Literacy Educators and Researchers (ALER), Dr. Parsons is currently co-editor of the Journal of Literacy Research and associate editor of Reading and Writing Quarterly. His books include Accelerating Learning Recovery for All Students: Core Principles for Getting Literacy Growth Back on Track (with Margaret Vaughn) and Principles of Effective Literacy Instruction, K-5 (with Margaret Vaughn).

Dr. Chase Young

Dr. Chase Young is a Professor of Literacy at Sam Houston State University and the associate director of the Teaching and Learning Center. A former elementary teacher and reading specialist, Dr. Young’s research focuses on reading fluency, literacy interventions, and effective instructional practices.

His work has appeared in top journals, including Reading Research Quarterly, The Reading Teacher, Journal of Research in Reading, and Journal of Educational Research. Dr. Young has authored numerous award winning books and articles, and he frequently leads professional development for educators across the country.

He is the recipient of several prestigious awards from international organizations, such as the A.B. Herr Award, and the Diane Lapp & James Flood Professional Collaborator Award. Widely recognized for blending scholarship with humor and practical application, Dr. Young is passionate about helping teachers bring research to life in their classrooms.
